Case Study: Wind power and PV forecasts for integrating renewables into the electricity market

Illustrative image.

The April 2018 case study described Croatian electricity-market operator HROTE's use of enercast wind and PV forecasts. It discussed integrating weather-dependent generation into the electricity market and reported that the service had been used since May 2016. Those statements document the arrangement described in 2018, not a current contract confirmation.

The information flow described

HROTE supplied production data, while forecast updates supported its feed-in workflow. The report distinguished wind and PV forecasting arrangements and discussed the value of combining international weather information with plant measurements. Historical portfolio totals and update schedules have not been presented here as current specifications.

System value and customer value differ

The original article made an important distinction: benefits to the wider electricity system were not necessarily identical to immediate cost savings for HROTE under its role at that time. A forecast's economic value depends on who bears imbalance responsibility and how the organisation uses the information. A reduction in one uncertainty does not automatically create the same financial result for every participant.

Evaluating a comparable workflow

A present-day assessment should define the market role, asset list, measurement boundary and schedule deadline. It should inspect generation error and delivery reliability and then relate them to the actual decision process. This page preserves a dated market-integration case without inferring present operations, current portfolio capacity or a generalised percentage benefit.
