2014-02-07: Fraunhofer researchers win wind forecasting competition

In February 2014, enercast reported results from a forecasting benchmark initiated in 2013 within the WIRE COST Action, Weather Intelligence for Renewable Energies. Participants from Europe, Japan, India, the United States and Australia were given common historical weather and power-output data for two wind parks in Italy.

The benchmark compared methods for translating meteorological forecasts into expected wind-power output under contrasting terrain conditions. The announcement reported that Fraunhofer IWES algorithms generated the best forecasts in that historical comparison, using neural networks with task-specific topology, training and preparation of input data.

The article connected that work to enercast’s cooperation with Fraunhofer IWES. The reported result belongs to the particular historical datasets and benchmark conditions. It is not evidence of current accuracy, current market ranking or an expected result for another portfolio.
