Improved ICON-EU model may affect forecast quality

On 23 November 2022, enercast published a notice about an update to DWD's ICON-EU weather model. The notice described higher horizontal and vertical resolution and explained that the change could affect weather inputs used in European asset forecast ensembles. This page preserves that historical service notice; it is not an alert that a transition is taking place now.

The response described at the time

The original notice outlined a transition period for affected wind assets while new weather and generation data were collected for retraining. It said the ICON-EU contribution to an ensemble might need to be reduced during that period, depending on the site's weighting. The notice expected less sensitivity for the solar parameters concerned. These statements describe the 2022 response and do not confirm a present configuration for any customer's forecast.

The broader operational lesson

A weather-model upgrade can change the distribution of inputs seen by a trained power model. Higher resolution is valuable, but it is not by itself proof of improved asset-level power accuracy. Integration checks should cover field definitions, interpolation, timestamps and delivery, while evaluation should inspect the final generation forecast. Historical model notices are useful records of that change-management process. Questions about today's inputs or forecast behaviour need a current product-specific discussion.
